AWASE MEADOWS GOLF COURSE, Okinawa – More than eighty service members and local businessmen participated in the first Breast Cancer Research Golf Tournament Oct. 19, 2002.

The purpose of the tournament was to enhance breast cancer awareness. The idea for the golf tournament came about when many people expressed the desire to do something for breast cancer, according to Dr. Gayle Vaughn-Wiles, deputy superintendent, Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Pacific Okinawa District.

"This is a very special time because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month," said Vaughn-Wiles, who have two breast cancer survivors in her family.

The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sponsored the tournament with its theme "Drive out Breast Cancer." The sorority is a nonprofit community service organization that works closely with community leaders in five areas: educational development, economical development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement.

"The communities, both military and Okinawan, have provided contributions that will be given to a multicultural organization to provide services and research in the area of breast cancer," Vaughn-Wiles said.

The money was donated to the Common Cares Cancer Foundation to further research and development.

"Breast cancer prevention can truly be a success story if we get the funding and support to do the early diagnoses and treatment," said Navy Capt. Clinton F. Faison III, group surgeon, Headquarters Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group.

"Public awareness and funding through events like this are what lead to cures," said Faison. "I was especially impressed by the involvement of the Okinawan people in this event. I am in awe at the cooperation and friendship that I see on a continual basis at events like this where people from extremely different and diverse backgrounds comes together for a common goal of eradicating breast cancer."
